The Italian Embassy in Harare asks for a return or onward air ticket OR a travel-agent itinerary with confirmed reservations. Tripenger recommends a genuine reservation with PNR for the latter route; the published checklist does not explicitly require a PNR or a paid ticket in every case.

We used the sources below to prepare this guide. Official sources are the place to check current visa requirements. Community discussions can offer practical experiences, but they may not apply to your application.
Based on the guidance linked above, we recommend considering a flight reservation with a PNR to show your planned travel. Tripenger’s PNR package includes an airline booking reference, subject to airline availability. The guidance does not explicitly require a PNR, so please check the latest requirements with the relevant visa authority before ordering.
Whether you are planning a Rome holiday, visiting relatives or travelling to a meeting in Milan, your Italy visa application needs a clear travel plan. Zimbabwean ordinary passport holders normally need a visa. A Schengen visa (type C) covers short visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period; longer study, work or residence generally uses a national visa (type D). Italy’s Harare checklist expressly includes an itinerary with confirmed flight reservations.
For a standard short visit, Tripenger recommends a genuine reservation with a PNR. The Italian Embassy’s checklist accepts a return or onward air ticket, or a travel-agent itinerary with confirmed reservations. Its separate travel notice also refers to a reserved return journey or evidence of onward travel. A list of proposed flight times without a booking does not meet the description of a confirmed reservation.
Use these official pages for the latest checklist and submission instructions. Tripenger’s package recommendations and flight-planning advice are interpretations of the guidance, not an embassy endorsement or a guarantee of visa approval.
These discussions helped identify practical questions for the FAQs. They contain personal experiences, which may differ from your circumstances and can include outdated or incorrect advice. Use the official sources above for requirements.
Where do I submit my Italy visa application in Zimbabwe?
Apply at the Italian Embassy in Harare if you live in Zimbabwe and Italy is the main destination of your trip. Contact the visa section at consolato.harare@esteri.it for the current appointment procedure and category checklist. The Embassy’s published requirements cover Zimbabwean citizens and other people officially resident in Zimbabwe; be ready to prove residence if applicable.
What type of flight itinerary do I need for Italy?
Choose an itinerary backed by confirmed reservations. The Harare checklist allows a return or onward ticket, or an itinerary from a travel agent with confirmed reservations. Tripenger’s recommendation is a PNR reservation package for that purpose. The Basic schedule-only document does not create a reservation, so it should not be used as though it were the confirmed booking described in the checklist.
Do I have to buy a paid flight ticket before my Italy visa is approved?
A paid ticket is not the only option in the published short-stay checklist: a travel-agent itinerary with confirmed reservations is also listed. That lets you provide a genuine reservation before committing to a fare, unless the Embassy requests ticket issuance in your case. Check the reservation deadline and any later instructions before paying a non-refundable airline fare.
Can I book a different flight after my visa is approved?
Usually, yes. You can choose another airline or flight time for the same genuine visit to Italy. Keep travel within the visa’s validity, permitted stay and entries, and update accommodation and insurance as needed. Carry your current booking confirmations when travelling. Ask the issuing authority about changes to your main destination or purpose. Once approved, search Tripenger for flight deals to Italy.
How long will my flight reservation remain valid?
A reservation with a PNR lasts until the airline’s ticketing or cancellation deadline; it is not automatically held until your visa decision. Check the deadline before ordering and make sure the booking is valid when you submit it. If the visa office later requests updated evidence, arrange a fresh reservation. A schedule-only itinerary has no reserved seats to expire.
What if I am staying with friends or relatives in Italy?
The Harare checklist allows a host letter confirming where you will stay in Italy and gives additional invitation requirements for friends and relatives. Ask the Embassy which invitation form and supporting financial documents apply to your host arrangement. Your accommodation evidence should reflect the real private stay, rather than a hotel you do not intend to use.
Can my itinerary show onward travel instead of a return to Zimbabwe?
Yes. The Embassy’s travel notice recognises onward travel when you will not return to Zimbabwe. Show where you will go after Italy and any entry permission needed for that destination. Include the relevant confirmed onward reservation and other evidence requested. A one-way arrival into Italy on its own does not explain your short-visit departure plan.
Should my hotel booking be paid before I apply?
Read the Harare requirements carefully: the published checklist refers to hotel or tour bookings paid in full, or a host letter confirming the address of stay. If you plan to use a pay-later hotel, ask the Embassy whether that evidence is acceptable before relying on it. Where you pay in advance, check cancellation and refund conditions.
Does this advice also apply to a student or long-stay visa?
For an Italian degree or another stay over 90 days, use the national visa instructions for your purpose. Student and work applications need their own supporting evidence. Ask the Embassy what arrival reservation is required for your course or contract rather than inventing an early return to fit a tourist checklist. This page’s confirmed return/onward guidance concerns short-stay applications.
How do I order a flight itinerary for Italy on Tripenger?
Go to Tripenger’s itinerary page, enter your proposed journey and select the package matching your document requirement. Basic supplies a flight schedule without a PNR and is delivered within 10 minutes of payment confirmation. Choose a PNR package when you need a reservation, and check its delivery and hold terms. Airline booking retrieval is subject to the airline’s systems and ticketing deadlines. Tripenger does not decide your visa application.
Can I order an accommodation itinerary or hotel booking on Tripenger?
Not yet. Tripenger does not currently arrange hotel reservations or accommodation itineraries. Obtain the hotel or host evidence that meets the Italian Embassy’s checklist directly from the relevant provider or host. A flight itinerary does not include accommodation.
Can I buy travel insurance for Italy on Tripenger?
Not yet. Tripenger does not currently sell travel insurance; buy your policy separately from an insurer. The Harare checklist asks for international medical cover for the whole trip, including emergency treatment and repatriation, and states cover in excess of €30,000. Follow that wording when selecting the policy. An itinerary purchase does not include insurance.
